The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) has strongly condemned the recent mob attack on officers of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at Bronikrom, near Hwidiem in the Asutifi South Constituency of the Ahafo Region.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, November 1, 2025, involved a group of individuals allegedly assaulting members of the state security agency tasked with supporting the government’s anti-galamsey (illegal mining) operations.
In a statement signed by Godwin Nickleson Amarh, General Secretary of GNASSM, the Association described the event as “an unfortunate and unacceptable act”, warning that such attacks threaten both national security and the rule of law.
“GNASSM strongly condemns this unfortunate act in no uncertain terms and urges all parties to remain calm. It is important to stress that NAIMOS operates as a legitimate state institution, and under no circumstances should its officers become targets of mob actions while discharging their lawful duties,” the statement read.
GNASSM Warns Against Repeat of 2017 Major Mahama Tragedy
The Association reminded the public of the tragic 2017 incident that led to the death of army officer Major Maxwell Mahama, cautioning that violent confrontations with security personnel could result in devastating consequences.
“We wish to remind all mining communities to take heed from a tragic precedent in 2017, when the unlawful attack on army officer Major Mahama resulted in his untimely death,” GNASSM stated.
It therefore appealed to youths in mining areas to channel grievances or complaints against NAIMOS through local leadership and proper legal avenues rather than resorting to violence.
Partnership Between GNASSM and NAIMOS
GNASSM revealed that it has been collaborating with NAIMOS over the past month to educate small-scale miners on the mandate and operations of the task force. These sensitisation activities aim to foster peaceful coexistence between miners and security officials in mining communities.
According to the Association, education and dialogue remain the best ways to address concerns, not confrontation.
Call for Government Investigation and Accountability
The GNASSM called on the government of Ghana to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into the Bronikrom attack, urging authorities to prosecute those responsible.
“We call on government to launch a prompt and thorough investigation into this incident and to take decisive action against anyone found responsible or complicit in the attack. Such measures will serve as a deterrent to others who may consider taking similar lawless actions,” the statement urged.
The Association reaffirmed its commitment to responsible and legal small-scale mining, emphasizing that maintaining law and order is key to sustaining the mining industry and protecting national resources.
