President Mahama Commended at IMO Meeting for GH¢10 Million Humanitarian Donation to Sudan, Jamaica and Cuba

Ghana and President John Dramani Mahama received strong commendation at the 135th International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council Meeting in London for donating GH¢10 million worth of humanitarian aid to Sudan, Jamaica and Cuba.
The recognition came after the Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Naval Captain (Rtd.) Kamal-Deen Ali, delivered a statement highlighting Ghana’s commitment to global solidarity and support in times of crisis.


Ghana’s Humanitarian Donation: What It Included

The GH¢10 million humanitarian assistance was distributed among three nations impacted by conflict and natural disasters:

  • 50% to Jamaica – devastated by recent hurricanes

  • 30% to Cuba – also affected by severe storms

  • 20% to Sudan – enduring prolonged conflict and humanitarian crisis

Breakdown of the Items Donated

The relief package included:

  • 2,400 bags of Ghana rice

  • 540 bags of sugar

  • 377 boxes of medication

  • 500 mattresses and 500 pillows

  • 100 cartons of gari mix

  • 50,000 T-shirts

  • Three 20-footer containers of chocolate products

  • 20 pieces of 500-litre water tanks

  • 20 hand-wash stations

  • 10 emergency portable toilets

  • Assorted clothing

These items were intended to provide immediate relief to affected communities in all three countries.


Remarks from the Ghana Maritime Authority

During the IMO meeting, Naval Captain (Rtd.) Kamal-Deen Ali noted that the donation symbolised “Ghana’s deep solidarity, respect and fraternity for the victims in the affected nations.”
He added that by supporting partner countries in their time of need, Ghana demonstrates the shared humanity that connects nations across continents.

His statement reportedly drew applause for President Mahama’s humanitarian leadership.


Ghana to Send Engineers to Support Reconstruction in Jamaica

At the 80th anniversary celebration of the Manchester Declaration (Fifth Pan-African Congress) in Accra, President Mahama further announced that Ghana would deploy personnel from the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to Jamaica.
