Job Description
The primary role of the school nurse is to support student learning by promoting the health and safety of students and staff. This is achieved through critical thinking, decision-making, communication, individual and classroom education, and child advocacy.
Performance Responsibilities
- Nursing Care and Emergencies: Provide nursing care and manage all medical emergencies for students and staff.
- Medication Administration: Administer daily and PRN medications as prescribed by physicians.
- Health Education: Promote healthy habits among students through individual and group health education in classrooms and assemblies.
- Medical Records Management: Screen and update medical records quarterly, focusing on immunizations, food allergies, and other health issues.
- Parental Engagement: Encourage parental responsibility regarding children’s health and support families in achieving optimal health outcomes.
- Mental Health: Assess students’ mental health needs, provide interventions, and refer to appropriate school staff or community agencies.
- Healthy Environment: Maintain a safe school environment by identifying and addressing health and safety concerns.
- Infection Control: Control infection through community education on healthy practices, early identification, and advising on keeping sick children at home.
- Community Health Referrals: Refer students, staff, and families to appropriate community health agencies and set up appointments for staff when needed.
- Staff Education and Training: Educate staff on health issues and assist in CPR/First Aid training during workshops.
- Eye and Dental Health: Promote students’ eye and dental health through education and developmental screening.
- Health Advising: Advise individual school staff on health issues and orient new staff on community health agencies.
- Confidentiality: Maintain student confidentiality within legal, regulatory, and ethical parameters.
- Non-Discriminatory Care: Deliver care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that respects student diversity.
- Professional Development: Enhance professional skills through continuing education, including workshops, journal subscriptions, and conferences.
- Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Head Nurse.
