For Every Child, Safe Sanitation
UNICEF, a leading child-rights organization, has long been dedicated to improving children’s lives. In Ghana, UNICEF collaborates with the Government and other partners to protect children’s rights, ensuring equitable access to quality social services and expanding opportunities for children to reach their full potential. With offices in Accra and Tamale, the UNICEF team works towards strategic program goals, aligning with government priorities, the UN Sustainable Development Partnership, and key results for children in the West and Central African Region.
How Can You Make a Difference?
Achieving SDG target 6.2, which aims for access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and ending open defecation by 2030, remains a significant challenge. In Ghana, only 25% of households have access to improved and exclusively used toilet facilities, and approximately 17% still practice open defecation.
UNICEF collaborates with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) and other stakeholders to accelerate progress towards SDG 6.2. Currently, UNICEF partners with six Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to implement innovative sanitation interventions, including the Sanitation and Housing Integration Programme for Scale (SHIP4S). This program aims to establish a social norm where toilets are integral to houses. The internship will involve remotely monitoring MMDA-level implementation, compiling reports, and documenting lessons and success stories from the field.
Key Tasks
- Undertake weekly remote follow-ups on MMDA activity implementation and submit summarized updates.
- Support monthly online review meetings with MMDAs and provide summarized progress reports.
- Assist in organizing in-person workshops and related documentation.
- Document field-level success stories and lessons learned for knowledge management.
Key Deliverables
- Weekly and monthly consolidated program/activity reports from all implementing MMDAs.
- Monthly updated action points tracker for MMDA review meetings and occasional workshops.
- Draft field-level stories for at least two MMDAs.
