Ghana Harmattan Season 2025/2026: GMet Warns of Delayed and Weak Dry Period

The Ghana Harmattan Season 2025/2026 is expected to be unusually delayed and generally weak, according to a public weather advisory issued by the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet). The advisory, dated 30 December 2025, warns of lingering rainfall in southern Ghana and occasional severe dust episodes in the north, conditions described as rare for this time of year.

Unusual Delay and Rainfall Patterns Across Ghana

In its assessment, GMet noted that many parts of southern Ghana were still experiencing rainfall in late December, a phenomenon it described as “statistically rare for this time of year.” Even northern regions, which normally experience peak dryness during Harmattan, recorded sporadic rainfall.

The delay has been attributed to significant fluctuations in the Inter-Tropical Boundary (ITB) and warm sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Guinea, which have allowed moisture to persist across the country.

Forecast for First Quarter of 2026

Looking ahead to early 2026, GMet forecasts a generally weak Harmattan season, though it cautions that occasional severe conditions may still occur.

  • Northern Ghana: Expected to experience intense dryness, dusty conditions, and reduced visibility due to dust plumes.

  • Middle Belt and Coastal Areas: Likely to experience a mild or weak dry season with higher humidity levels and fewer hazy days.

  • Forest Zones: May continue to see localised rainfall due to ongoing ITB fluctuations.

Health and Safety Precautions for the Harmattan

GMet has urged the public to take precautionary measures to reduce health and safety risks associated with Harmattan conditions:

  1. Increase daily water intake to prevent dehydration.

  2. Wear nose masks during periods of dense dust haze.

  3. Avoid open-air burning, especially in dry northern areas.

  4. Drive cautiously, particularly in early mornings and late nights.

  5. Use fog lights or headlamps when visibility is reduced.

  6. Wear light clothing during the day and warmer clothing at night.

Official Remarks from Ghana Meteorological Agency

Explaining the unusual weather pattern, GMet stated:

“The delayed Harmattan is due to the Inter-Tropical Boundary remaining further north than usual, combined with warm sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Guinea, allowing moisture to persist over the country.”

The Agency also confirmed it will “continue to monitor these atmospheric changes closely and issue updates when significant changes are expected.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is the Harmattan cancelled for 2025/2026?
No. The Harmattan is expected to occur, but it will be weaker and delayed compared to normal years.

Will there still be dust during the Harmattan?
Yes. Northern Ghana may experience severe dust episodes, although southern regions will see fewer hazy days.

Why is it still raining in December?
This is due to unusual ITB movements and warm ocean temperatures sustaining moisture over Ghana.
