Overview of the Director, Conservation and Research Programmes Job:
The Director will play a vital role in shaping and executing the Society’s biodiversity and conservation strategy. This includes identifying priority conservation issues in Ghana and implementing scientific research to address them. The role also focuses on project planning, fundraising, and team leadership.
Duty Station: Conservation Education Centre, Accra
Contract Duration: One year (renewable based on performance)
Reports To: Executive Director
Supervises: Programme Managers (e.g. KBAs/IBAs, Migratory Birds)
Key Responsibilities in Conservation Science:

Develop a forward-looking strategy for the conservation programme portfolio.

Identify and prioritise urgent biodiversity conservation issues in Ghana.

Oversee research activities and supervise studies on threatened species and habitats.

Collaborate on mapping and monitoring Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in Ghana.

Produce technical reports and peer-reviewed scientific publications.
Project and Team Management Duties:
Team Leadership:

Lead and mentor project teams, ensuring clear goals, regular appraisals, and capacity building.

Foster a collaborative culture and ensure high performance from research and conservation teams.
Project Execution:

Coordinate project planning, workplans, and budgeting.

Ensure efficient resource allocation and consultant management.

Monitor and evaluate project progress, ensuring alignment with timelines and budget constraints.
Fundraising and Stakeholder Engagement:

Develop and implement a strategic fundraising plan.

Identify and pursue funding opportunities aligned with GWS priorities.

Build relationships with current and prospective donors.

Work with local and international partners, consultants, and government institutions to promote conservation goals.
Required Qualifications and Experience:

MPhil or PhD in Biological Sciences, Natural Resources Management, or related fields.

At least 5 years of experience in a scientific officer or leadership role.

Proven expertise in project proposal writing and implementation.

Strong background in protected area management, sustainable land use, and conservation financing.

Excellent communication skills, including scientific writing and presentations.

Proficiency in computer software (MS Office, GIS, STATA, etc.).
