Key Responsibilities of the Safety Officer – Systems
The Safety Officer will support the mine’s transition from construction to operational phases while enhancing safety culture and compliance across all departments.
1. Safety Systems & Risk Management
-
Conduct risk assessments and support fatal risk management actions

Assist units with implementing safety systems and risk control processes
-
Facilitate incident investigations and ensure lessons learned are shared
2. Incident Monitoring & Reporting
-
Monitor incident trends to guide OHS program improvements
-
Prepare regulatory reports and submit them on time
3. Training & Capacity Building
-
Develop safety training programmes to enhance knowledge and safety culture
-
Provide leadership in the OHS Systems and Capacity Building Unit
4. Documentation & Compliance
-
Maintain OHS documents per site management procedure
-
Support internal/external audits for compliance verification
-
Manage OHS information on the department’s intranet
5. Performance Tracking
-
Monitor and report mine safety leading indicators
-
Support implementation of mine-wide OHS programmes
Required Qualifications
-
Degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, or related field
-
ISO 45001 Internal or Lead Auditor Certification
-
ISO 31000 Risk Management certification
-
Certification in incident investigation (IIP, Taproot, etc.)
-
NEBOSH or any accredited Safety Management Certification
-
Process Safety competency
-
Minerals Commission Health & Safety Certificate (advantage)
Experience Required
Applicants must have:

At least 5 years of experience working under mining regulations

Strong knowledge of Safety Management System implementation

Experience with digital safety systems such as iSIMS, Forwood, Evotix Assure
-
Experience facilitating incident investigations

Understanding of mine traffic management and compliance

Ability to work with diverse and high-performing teams
